Tennis Muallim Initiatives

Matchplay 

The Muallim Matchplay Tennis Junior League program is designed for young players in three age groups: 12 & Under, 15 & Under, 18 & Under, Mix Age group and Open (the Open category is designed to be participated by any interested parents or coach that can provide competitive matchplay with especially 18 & Under).

 

This competition runs over 10 weeks, offering flexibility for players to schedule matches at any court and time agreed upon by participants.

 

Each group / division consists of 4 to 8 players competing in a league (round-robin) format. Limited places, first come first served basis.

UPSI Muallim Matchplay League: Rules & Implementation Pack

  1. 10-week window for an 8-week season plus buffer/admin

  2. Division and eligibility: Age-group / level of play.Max 8 players per division (can be more if able to complete)

  3. Format: Round-robin, self-scheduled.

  4. Season length: 8 weeks (Weeks 1–7 for matches; Week 8 = catch-up/finals ceremonies).

  5. Courts: UPSI KSAJS courts as main court, with other courts around Muallim if agreed by both players playing.

  6. Match rules: Pro-set to 8 (tiebreak at 7–7) — typical 60–75-min slot. Warm-up: max 7 minutes. New balls encouraged. U12/Division 4 set to 6 (tiebreak 7 at 5-5).

  7. Scoring & table points: Win=2 points, Loss (played) = 1 points. Tiebreakers (in order): head-to-head → sets won % → games won % → earliest “all-matches-completed” time stamp → coin toss.

  8. Scheduling

  9. Players self-organise by WhatsApp/phone, inform Event Coordinator (Ikhwan) for any scheduled matches, and report result (by both players) to Event Coordinator. 

  10. Home/away doesn’t matter—the court is UPSI. If courts are full, any agreed public court is allowed.

  11. Deadlines: 1 match per player each week (or 2 if catching up).

  12. Balls: Bring your own.

  13. Lateness/WO: 15-minute grace; after that, player ready to play may claim WO (coordinator must approve).

  14. Weather: If stopped <50% completed → reschedule; ≥50% and ahead by 2+ games in the current set → may count by mutual consent, else reschedule.

  15. Conduct & coaching: Follow ITF/LTAM code of conduct standards: call your own lines, replay if unsure; no on-court coaching in adult divisions; parents/coaches may not coach mid-point.

  16. Safeguarding (juniors): All communications go via parents/guardians. Parent/guardian must be on-site or explicitly consent to a named chaperone. No private DM with minors.

  17. Injuries/retirements: Completed games/sets stand; incomplete set is recorded as retired (RET).

  18. Prizes & mid-season token: At Week 4 checkpoint, any player with ≥3 matches completed receives a small gift. Division Winner + Runner-up receive end-season awards. Certificates provided to all participants that completed all matches.

  19. Admin & data (privacy-aware): Contacts list (shared within each division only): Player name, parent name (for juniors), phone/WhatsApp, preferred times, division. Consent need to be obtained from each parents prior inclusion in any whatsapp group or parents accept invitation links. 

  20. Comms: 1 WhatsApp group per division 

  21. Results reporting: Via Google Form provided, need to be filled by both players using registered email.

About

Tennis Muallim is an initiative for community engagement that uses tennis as a medium for lifelong fitness, while simultaneously developing a grassroots development model for tennis (district level, institutions of higher learning, and community clubs). Activities for this initiatives are academic-based activities based on typical academician's 9 targeted key-performance indicators (KPIs) (training, teaching, supervision, research, publication, consultation, academic leadership, contribution to society & university, and personal quality development).

The initiative manage and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Nur Ikhwan, Dr Hazuan and Ms Nor Fazila.

Dr. Hazuan Hizan is a former Malaysian national tennis player and accomplished coach with over 25 years of experience in high-performance sport and athlete development. He represented Malaysia at elite international tournaments including the Davis Cup and NCAA Division 1 College Tennis USA, and captured the 1994 RSGC Men’s Singles Championship. His competitive career included stints on the ATP Tour, earning valuable experience against top regional and international opponents.

With a PhD in Sports Science from the University of Western Australia, Dr. Hizan’s academic research focuses on tactical performance in elite tennis, specifically analyzing serve and return patterns using Hawk-Eye data. His combination of elite playing experience and scientific coaching approach makes him a unique asset in tennis development.
